In the opulent yet treacherous Italian city-state, where a weak and corrupt court holds sway, you are the head of a powerful family. To rise above the machinations and seize control, you must employ cunning manipulation, masterful bluffing, and strategic bribery. Your ultimate objective: to dismantle the influence of all rival families, banishing them into exile and emerging as the sole powerbroker. Only one family will ultimately survive the ruthless game of Coup!

In this thrilling game of deception and deduction, your influence is paramount. It,s represented by the face-down character cards you hold close, hidden from the prying eyes of your adversaries. Each player begins their ascent with two coins and two whispers of influence – two face-down character cards drawn from a deck of fifteen. This courtly collection comprises three copies each of five distinct characters, each wielding a unique and potent ability:

• Duke: Command the treasury, taking three coins at your whim. Moreover, exert your authority to block any opponent,s attempts to claim foreign aid.
• Assassin: For a shadowy price of three coins, attempt to eliminate a rival,s influence, targeting one of their precious character cards.
• Contessa: Stand as an impenetrable shield against assassination attempts, thwarting those who seek your downfall.
• Captain: Plunder the wealth of another player, seizing two coins for your family,s coffers. Alternatively, stand guard against those who would steal your hard-earned gains.
• Ambassador: Delve into the secrets of the Court, drawing two character cards from the deck. Choose wisely whether to exchange them with your hidden influence, then return two cards to the Court, shaping your destiny. Furthermore, protect your family,s wealth from theft.

On your turn, the path to power lies open. You may boldly enact any of the character actions listed above, regardless of the identities of the characters you secretly hold. Or, you may choose one of three other decisive actions:

• Income: Steadily accrue wealth, taking one coin from the treasury.
• Foreign Aid: Seek external support, claiming two coins from the treasury.
• Coup: When your coffers swell to seven coins, launch a direct assault on an opponent,s influence, forcing them to reveal and lose a character card. (Beware! If your family,s wealth reaches ten coins or more, this action becomes mandatory, a testament to your growing power.)

When you declare a character action – either proactively on your turn or defensively in response to an opponent,s play – its success is automatic... unless a challenger dares to question your claim. In such a confrontation, if you cannot (or choose not to) reveal the character corresponding to your action, you suffer a loss of influence, turning one of your hidden characters face-up. Exposed characters are rendered powerless, and if both your influences are revealed, your family is exiled from the city-state.

However, if your claim is true and you reveal the character in question, your challenger pays the price, losing an influence. The revealed character is then shuffled back into the Court deck, and you draw a replacement, your fortunes shifting once more.

Ultimately, only one family can navigate the web of deceit and emerge victorious. The last player to retain influence – a face-down character – claims doMinniun over the city-state!

A cunning new player has entered the fray: the Inquisitor (available in select editions). This optional character can replace the Ambassador, adding another layer of intrigue to the courtly drama.

• Inquisitor: Peer into the Court deck, drawing one character card and deciding whether to exchange it with your hidden influence. OR Force an opponent to reveal one of their character cards (their choice). If you desire, you may then compel them to draw a new card from the Court deck, shuffling the old one back into the Court. Additionally, protect your family,s wealth from theft.
